Cumulative economic damage to Sweden’s data center industry from discriminatory energy tax policies
Three loss categories. One total.
Historical losses are frozen estimates based on documented damages and press reports. The ongoing loss ticks in real time based on industry consumption since the July 2023 abolition.
Colocation Operator Losses
Tax not returned, investments destroyed, businesses bankrupted. Estimated aggregate damages for colocation operators excluded by the 2018 reinterpretation.
VAT Overpaid by Miners
Cryptocurrency miners paid VAT on operations based on incorrect advice from Swedish law firms and consultants, creating an estimated €100M in unrecovered VAT.
Ongoing Industry Losses
Energy tax reduction abolished for all data centers. Full industry consumption (4 TWh/year) now taxed at the standard rate while manufacturing keeps its benefit.
How these numbers are calculated.
All inputs are derived from publicly available government data and industry estimates. The calculation is fully transparent.
